Travel conditions for Czech citizens traveling abroad

Travel documents for citizens of the Czech Republic

A citizen of the Czech Republic may travel abroad only with a valid travel document, which means:

  • a valid passport or another type of travel document according to Act No. 329/1999 Coll., on travel documents, as amended,
  • a valid national ID card when travelling to countries of the European Union and to Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland.

The passport, as well as the national ID card, is considered a travel document only for its holder, not for children listed in it. More information about travelling with children can be found in the section Travelling with Children.

Traveling with Ryanair

We would like to inform passengers travelling with Ryanair that, according to the airline’s instructions, passengers whose travel document does not include a nationality field cannot be checked in. This applies in particular to national ID cards with short-term validity (see types of personal documents at www.mvcr.cz).

Traveling with an ID card with a cut corner

In general, it is not recommended to travel using an identity card with a cut-off corner, as the removal of the corner may be considered an indication of invalidity or damage to the ID when verifying the holder’s identity in an EU member state.

Validity of travel documents

The travel document should be valid for at least the duration of your planned stay outside the Czech Republic, but some countries may require significantly longer validity. Therefore, we recommend checking the specific requirements with the embassy or consular office of the country you plan to visit.

Loss of a travel document abroad

In the event of losing your travel document abroad, you must contact the nearest Czech embassy or consulate. They will issue a temporary replacement travel document for the purpose of returning to the Czech Republic. This document is valid for a single journey back to the Czech Republic.
