Rules for check-in and baggage transport

What to watch out for

Passengers are advised that in order to ensure a smooth check-in process, baggage weight limits must be carefully observed. The sizes and dimensions of cabin and hand luggage are not uniformly regulated. Rules vary from airline to airline, so please check with your carrier in advance!

Hand luggage

As a rule, only one piece of hand luggage is allowed. Check with your carrier how many pieces of hand luggage you can carry on board the aircraft. The weight and size rules are also very important.

Baggage for check-in

Baggage check-in rules can be found on the airlines' websites.

Oversized luggage and animals

Oversized or non-standard luggage such as bicycles, skis, surfboards, musical instruments, etc., must be reported to the check-in counter. Such baggage is checked in at the desk labelled Oversized Baggage to the right of the check-in counters. Please consult your airline in advance for any unusual baggage. So is the carriage of animals.

Dangerous and prohibited items in luggage

Be sure to check which items are not allowed in your hand luggage or checked luggage before you travel. For a detailed overview, see Security Rules and Policies.

Useful tips for your luggage

  • For your own safety, label your baggage with your name and address, or a phone number.
  • Keep valuable items, important documents, or medication in your cabin baggage.
  • Lock your baggage or have it professionally wrapped.
  • Remove any old tags and labels from previous trips. This reduces the risk of damage or misrouting of your baggage.
